ST. JOHNLAND NURSING CENTER has received a generous grant from The Townwide Fund of Huntington to purchase a kiosk and subscribe to the new Linked Senior service. Linked Senior is a web-based program that uses touchscreen kiosks and personal Linked Senior tablets to provide access to entertainment, education, spiritual and intellectual content. It is similar to an iPad but it is senior-friendly. It provides virtually limitless content that can be accessed easily with no typing or Google searches needed. Linked Senior engages residents at all levels. It is highly effective in providing meaningful stimulation to low-functioning residents while also challenging the minds of the most active ones.
The Linked Senior system connects to photos, videos, and stories from past decades to encourage memories. Residents can reminisce over familiar movies and music from another era. It has puzzles and trivia to keep minds engaged. It includes access to religious and spiritual information and services of all faiths.
“Recreational Therapy at St. Johnland is a continuing effort to maintain cognitive functioning, promote wellness and build confidence. Our staff of 16 has an extensive schedule of activities and programs that serve the residents seven days a week,” reports Director Keri Gallagher. “This technology will help us provide more personalized interactions, and contains more sources of wellness and social activities to keep our residents engaged.”
